History and development

Since its establishment in 1966 and particularly after its privatization in 1999, Svilosa AD follows successfully a consistent and constructive development program aimed at promoting the Company to the highest international standards. Through its purposeful investment strategy Svilosa AD strives to become one of the leading companies for pulp and paper production on the Balkans and in whole Europe.

Till the end of 2007, a large-scale investment project to the value of Euro 55 million is going to be finalized in the daughter company Svilocell EAD, where the profitable production of bleached kraft pulp is separated. The investment is co-financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Nordic Investment Bank. For this project, in 2006 Svilosa AD was granted a First-Class Investment Certificate by the Ministry of Economy and Energy. Upon its realization, the production capacity of Svilocell EAD will be increased at up to 150 000 tons per year, the quality of the produced pulp will be improved through the implementation of best available technologies, the profit rate and the production energy efficiency will be increased, and all European ecological standards will be fulfilled.

Other projects of Svilosa group include a more and more active support of the development of forest industry in Bulgaria through the activity of the daughter company Ecosvil EOOD which is responsible for wood supplies for the production activity in Svilocell EAD. Svilosa AD is also investigating the opportunities for building a paper mill in order to close the production cycle and integrate the production of pulp, paper and energy. Besides, an expansion and modernization of the existing own port on the Danube river and participation in the construction of a ferryboat complex are envisaged, as well as other public-private partnership projects. There is a potential, too, for establishing an industrial zone and a competitive logistic network along the Danube.
